Where have I been and what's the news?

Hello hello lovely people!

I've been missing for a whiley and Rock N Retro has taken a bit of a backseat so what's been going on?

Well, it's been a funny ole year for me peronally. Things that I thought were set in stone weren't and I've had to adjust to life happening in a completely different way than was planned. With that happening I decided I was going to branch out from stocking just jewellery at RnR.

While I was working away planning things behind the scenes the most awesome job ever (apart from Rock N Retro) was advertised in the local paper and I decided to go for it.

Weeks of planning followed, then the interview and 6 weeks ago I started a new job as Sales Co-Ordinator in our local hospice's Charity Shop!

So my "main" job now is with the Bethesda Hospice Charity Shop for 30 hours a week. I have a band of lovely lady volunteers working in the shop, along with a few marvelous men working away in other areas.

For me it's a wonderful job: every day is different, the stock is always changing and we're raising much needed money for the Hospice. They have to raise £250,000 a year to keep the hospice going, and as it's the only hospice in the Outer Hebrides it's a much needed and greatly valued part of our Island community. And being a Charity Shop Shopper at heart helps a bit too :)

During my busy start at the new job I decided to take a wee break from RnR but we're back this weekend with a fabulous goodie bag offer:

Once I'm all settled in properly I'll be running Rock N Retro on a part-time basis, but I've some fabulous ideas up my sleeve for how I'm going to do it!

Muchos apologies people but it dawned on me today that holding the raffle draw tomorrow would be a bit silly as people who've ordered today won't have got their tickets yet, silly, silly me!

Oh the shame! Despite my promises this time last year I have been a very poor blogger, my many, many apologies.

Life sometimes throws us curveballs we weren't expecting, and 2010 threw some major ones at me. I'm SO glad that year is over and it's an exciting start to the New Year here at Rock N Retro towers :)

I've finally caved in and signed up to polyvore.

I'm pretty skint at the moment, my wardrobe isn't exactly brimming with fantabulous clothes to show off outfits and my social life is just about non-existant. So I'm thinking that this might be a way to browse clothes online and not feeling guilty about wasting my time, hah!

Mostly it'll be sets featuring one thing that I've got "I want that SO bad" teamed up with some other fab pieces and finished with a bit of Rock N Retro :)

My first set is pretty basic, I got far too excited and wanted to try it out right away, clickety click to view it bigger on our polyvore account.

Make Me An Offer!

I have a very love/hate relationship with ebay, when it's good it's fantastic but when it's bad it's awful!

It's where Rock N Retro started out back in the day so I suppose I'll always have a fondness for it and be grateful for discovering it after leaving a Uni course half-way through my 2nd year to head back home to Lewis from Glasgow.

I've been having a massive studio "room" sort out over the past week as I was supposed to be moving house shortly and didn't want to pack up all the bits and pieces that I know I'm just not going to use - items bought on a whim, pieces that I don't know what to do with, components that were bought for projects I'm just not going to have the time for and so on!

So naturally ebay called my name, and in a moment of quite possible madness I re-opened up a Rock N Retro ebay shop.

At the moment there are a couple of de-stash items, with plenty more to come over the next week or so once I get photos and descriptions sorted, and quite a lot of our current website items which all have the Best Offer option on them :)

There's even a Monsieur Moustache necklace that I found hidden away, along with a handful of other pieces I thought I'd sold out of but were hidden away in boxes. I really need to get more organised!

I have an unhealthy obsession with buying random mugs and also glasses that have any kind of alcohol brand on them, but we'll leave them till another day. Most of them are all boxed up at the moment as a house-move is on the horizon in the near future, hopefully sooner rather than later as we werre suppose to move at the end of April but it's still not finished yet!

Anyhoo, this beauty is one mug that is still on my shelves. I purchased a trio of them - Pot Spaghetti, Pot Rice and Pot Chilli - from ebay about four years ago now. Unfortunately the seller sent them in a flimsy box with barely any bubble wrap so they were all broken when they arrived. The Spaghetti and Rice were rescued as it was just the handles that were off, but the Chilli ended up in the smashed kitchenware graveyard :(

I was browsing through old photos this week, having a right old laugh at some of the dodgy hair-cuts my parents (and myself) had and remembering fun times.

I stumbled upon this photo, which is from an infamous trip to Edinburgh where, if I remember the story correctly, I yelled out for the driver to "STOP THE BUS" while we were crossing the Forth Road Bridge. Why? Because I needed the loo! I was only around three at the time so have an excuse :)

I remember when all the photobooths gave you a strip of four photos, all of them taken at a different time so all were slightly different:

My dad obviously had difficulty getting me to first look at the camera, and then keep me there :D

Really, really busy!

My days are taken up with making and posting out orders and my evenings have been taken up with painting the "new" house so we can get all the finishings done and finally move in - new office here I come :)

Rock n Retro Rarities - 13/03/10

I'm so looking forward to moving out of the shop/workshop and going back to basics - working from home!

We're actually moving house in the very near future and I'll have my own workshop and office space there, which I'm really excited about as it's going to give me so much more time to focus on the website again, getting things exactly how I want them :)

One of the new things that I'm hoping to build upon, when the move has finally taken place, is the introduction of our Rarities range. Rock n Retro Rarities are pieces which we make in limited edition quantities of 50 or less, once they're gone they're gone for good!

A Little Bit of Wonderland - 5/03/10

My Gran bought me the Lewis Carroll Books "Alice's adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the looking Glass" when I was a little girl. As a bookworm and lover of literature that transports you to another world I was hooked from the start.

The original Disney film is a firm favourite in my dvd collection and I just cannot wait to see the new one - Alice, Time Burton and Johnny Depp - what could be better :)

Our little cinema doesn't show films until about 2 months after they're out in the rest of the UK so I'm going to have to wait a while :( but to tide me over till then I've been designing some fab Wonderland inspired pieces - all unique to Rock n Retro, yeay!

Sad Times - 27/02/10

I announced over on our twitter account last week that we're leaving our Bricks & Mortar shop :(

There've been a few niggly things with the building, which if we stayed would drive me completely insane! So I've had to take the decision not to renew the lease when it comes to an end in March and our last open day as a shop will be a fortnight today: Saturday 13th March.

As I've not been able to find a decent sized premises in my local town (for a decent price) Rock n Retro is going back to basics and will be selling via our own website, through some fabulous independent Boutique Shops throughout the UK and in Italy (with more to come) and at selected events and fairs throughout the year :)

I'm feeling a wee bit sad about it even though we've only been here for a year. We changed things about a fair bit:

Lots of fresh paint, plasterboard, filling in holes a good scrub clean, a new hot water washer and more!

As a result of the impending move I've got lots of job lots of Fancy Dress, Make-up and various other bits and pieces over on ebay with more being added over the next fortnight as I've got nowhere to store all the bulky stuff!

And it's meant that I'm behind on the release of our New Ranges: Mad as a Hatter & Bow Tie Collections. I've got a few wee tweaks to do on a couple of pieces that should be done over the weekend, so add yourself to the mailing list and you'll be the first to hear when they go live :)

Back from Margin - 21/02/10

We got back on Friday from a fantastic show at Margin, now the hard work has started with working on orders and following up with emails!

As per the notice we had at the top of our shop page: If you ordered while we were away - Wed 10th to Thurs 18th - we started processing on Friday and the last of the backlog orders are due to be posted tomorrow (Monday 22nd) So we're now back to our normal posting of within 3 working days :)

We're at Margin! - 14/02/10

Phew! This past fortnight has been majorly hectic as we were getting ready for (and currently attending) the Margin Trade Show in London :)

Though we've done the Clothes Show Live before, we've never done a Trade event so all is new, exciting and at times a little bit scary.

Today was the first day and we've already met some lovely people and taken some orders so keep your eyes peeled on our stockists page as you might soon be able to buy Rock n Retro products at a Bricks & Mortar Shop near to you.

Before Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries there was Buffy. Full of witty one-liners, some very fanciable Vampires (and non-vampires!) and numerous Demons who're determined to take over the world, from the Hell-Mouth which sits just under Sunnydale High School!

I tweeted last night about making some kind-0f scary decisions in the world of Rock n Retro. Well part one of the scary decision making is that I'm finally stopping my eBay shop!

I've been threatening to leave ebay for about two years now. All the changes they've been making are pushing out the smaller sellers and focusing on the big "household name" businesses.

The stress of it all just gets too much sometimes, and now I've sat down and evaluated it all, it really just isn't worth the major hassle for me.

So dear readers and lovely customers, the Rock N Retro eBay shop will close late night on the 31st January / early in the morning on February 1st.

We've currently got a 30% sale on quite a lot of items so go check it out and grab yourself a bargain.

Halloween is Coming! - 17th October

Yup, Halloween is now only a fortnight away - squee!

The shop has been busy with people hunting down outfits for parties and "trick or treating" it's all go go go.

In the online shop we've got some swell Halloween themed treats: Necklaces, earrings, hair bows, rings and bracelets. They're not full on 31st Oct though and most would look just as fab at any other time of the year :)

He glows an eerie blue tinged colour overnight and I love him so!

As for my own costume? Well I'm keeping with it d.i.y as always with my Halloween Costumes, and am currently hunting down the last few pieces I need. . . . . Until the 31st it'll be kept underwraps :)

An all new to Lewis range of Manic Panic Dyes - 10 different colours/shades and the Cotton Candy Pink makes me want to dye my hair again, even though I said no more after the orange!

Rock n Retro Wins! - 11th September

A week ago today I was uber nervous, attending the ceremony for the Regional Finals of the PSYBT Business Awards (Outer Hebrides Region)

From those eligible we had been whittled down to two Businesses, myself with Rock n Retro and Anna Donachie from Barraheads Salon - The first and only salon on the Isle of Barra, no mean feat when the Island has a population of just around 1000 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barra http://www.isleofbarra.com

When the results were announced I was a bit gobsmacked, I honestly didn't think I would win, surprise! The following hour consisted of millions of photos, lots of talking and sneaking a few bites from the buffet before heading back to open the shop! 3 Months!!! - 13th August

Oh my gosh! Has it really been 3 MONTHS! since we last posted a blog!

A lot has been going on in the world of Rock n Retro, mostly just settling into our new premesis and keeping up with the Internet side of things.

Last night myself and the boy set to work on trying to finally get our shiny new machine working properly, and we're nearly there - woop! Hoping to have it up and running by the end of next week so we can get to work on a fantabulous new range of jewels, fingers crossed :)

Other news in the land of Rock n Retro is that we've got ourselves a stand at the local music festival Sounds in the Grounds again this year. If your local then pop along for some fab music all day from 12-midnight on the Castle Green, there's lots of other wee bits to do and of course the scrummy tea & cakes will be there again this year.

Since we've got the shop now we're planning something a bit different this year, it's currently top secret but we promise it's uber fun!

Long Time No Blog! - 4th May

Wow!

It's been nearly 2 months since my last blog entry - bad baaadd me :(

I promised myself that I would be good and blog at least once a week but things got majorly hectic with the shop/workshop and blogging had to take a backseat.

I've now been in the shop for just over a week and it's FAB

Juicy 70's flock wallpaper that I picked up in a charity shop about 3 years ago, I KNEW I'd find a good use for it :) - along with gold painted 70's plastic photo frames displaying some of my wears and I made myself some Hilda Ogden flying ducks :D

I'm now settling into a more 9-6 working day, and it's great for my work & life to be seperate!

So over the next month or so things will be bang back on track with the website and ebay, along with me keeping up my shiny new shop.

I'm also hoping to get some exciting new tools and machinery now I have the space for them - just have to wait for my supplier to get them back in stock. So sign up to the mailing list and you'll be amongst the first to know!

Some exciting news in the world of Rock N Retro, last weekend I signed a lease on a workshop/office space in my local town :D

A few pics below of how it was at the start. Myself and everyone I can get to help me are currently sorting it out and getting it how I want - the plan is to have it mainly as a workshop and office but to also have my Clothes Show retail counter so the fabby local people can drop in too!

Some more plans are afoot but they're top secret at the moment ;)

I've just added quite a few new items to the website today - including the much missed charm bracelets - each one is unique - and we sold out of them super early at the Clothes Show Live in December!

Now to go and do more work in the shop :D

I got a little tired of doing my paperwork tonight (book keeping isn't my favourite task of running my own business!) so what was a girl to do?

The light is all off so no use for taking photos, all the orders are packed ready for posting in the morning, I got a stack of new stuff listed on ebay over the weekend so I needed a distraction . . . . . and signed up to twitter to see what all the fuss is about!

I think finding people to follow is going to be a task for later in the week as I really should be getting some work done, but pop along and follow me as there's sure to be some hilarious moments as I figure out how the blooming thing works :D

My email problem's all been sorted now, phew! You can still contact me via the contact form on the main website (the most reliable way of me getting your email it seems!) or by emailing direct to sarah(at)rock-n-retro.co.uk with the at sign instead of the words :)

The regular visitors amongst you might have noticed a whole host of new items have arrived over the past week, but there are STILL some more to come! I'm so busy beavering away trying to keep up with orders and making and listing new stuff that my monthly mailing list email hasn't materialised in January, but will be back with some fab offers next month so keep your eyes on your inbox.

Unfortunately I seem to be having some email problems at the moment during my reshuffle of the website.

It's been all go in the land of Rock N Retro this past month and a bit!

We're kept busy busy sorting out all the little details for our trip to The Clothes Show Live - Last year was a blast but this year is going to be even better, promise :)

We've got oodles of new items coming up over the next fortnight, just ironing out sctuff like photos and descriptions. Our Animal Hearts necklaces have had a little revamp - we're not able to get the same sized heart anymore (Boo! We loved them so) but they're now bigger and better - new photos will be coming soon.

And if all that wasn't enough we've been featured on the Mizz website again AND in Mizz Magazine - A First for Rock N Retro, woop woop!
